The Store

It all started in 1920 when Mike Culwell’s grandfather, W.E. Culwell, founded Culwell & Son as a shop that pressed men’s suits. Dallas was a different place back then — the streets weren’t always paved and a good suit from Sears cost some $28. As the city grew, Dallas businessman began demanding better clothing. W.E. responded and the Varsity Shop was born. Here, the businessman of Dallas could find outstanding sutis for the then unheard of price of $45.

In 1958, W.E.’s son, Cully, took the reins quickly and expanded the business, forging new relationships with the best clothiers of the day. Cully changed the name of

the store from the Varsity Shop to Culwell & Son to better reflect the growing client base of executives, professionals and Dallas’ top CEOs.

As Dallas grew, other men’s stores came and went, and Culwell & Son began a serious expansion in the Park Cities store. A boys shop, shoe and tuxedo departments as well as a barber shop were added. Culwell also introduced new lines like Bills Khakis, Southern Tide, Robert Talbott and Zanella while continuing to celebrate the traditions of Hickey-Freeman and Oxxford clothing.

Most importantly, Culwell has always been staffed with

clothing professionals who’ve chosen Culwell & Son as a career. They’re the people that Dallas’ most important business and professional men trust to keep them looking great.

Our vision is to be The Men’s Store of Dallas, whether you need underwear or a fine custom suit, we’ve covered all the bases. Our tradition has been to develop a history with our customers and that tradition continues to this day.
